Amber Jean, Day 1

Going on set to be an extra in a movie your dress may be on film!
Worn over jeans and another 60′s style white and pasley dress.
I want to layer because I wasn’t sure what I would be doing
I started the shoot with the lbd on then took it off for the night club scene.
Went home and it was my jacket
Lots of Love,
Amber Jean

This is the final outfit of my wear-a-thon. I didn’t make it to 30 days, but I’m leaving Burning Man and going back to my home in San Francisco. Luckily, there are plenty of beautiful and fashionable ladies out here, and I’ve asked a few of them to do a Style Challenge.

Still, it’s the end for me, and I thought it would be fitting to visit the perimeter fence that marks the limits of Black Rock City. After the event is over, this fence is the last thing to disappear. When it goes, I go. Only the desert and the Calico Mountains remain.
I went with a dark and elegant look for this outfit. Amber Clisura loaned me this bias-cut net dress, which I wore underneath the LBD. I folded the dress’ lapels back to make a deep V, and added a red patent belt to hold it all together.
It’s been a wonderful year, but I’m ready to go home. I’ll miss the fashion shoots and feeling like a model, though. Thanks for reading, and I hope you’ve been entertained!

Dust storms are an integral part of the Burning Man experience. That’s not necessarily a good thing, but it’s something you learn to deal with for the sake of art.
We drove out to this caduceus sculpture with photographer Tracy Bugni, and had just started shooting when the dust hit. Fearing for our eyes, our lungs and her camera, we retreated to a safer spot…
The Cafe, where a selection of artists create paintings on plywood walls for temporary display. I don’t know who painted this (don’t know who built the caduceus, either), but it made a great backdrop.
For this outfit, I’m wearing that little black straw hat again. What can I say, I love it. I’ve got my awesome KISS belt on again, too. The skirt, however, is totally original. It’s a hand-woven piece by Lynne Bruning, which she lent me for this ensemble.
As I run out of clothes, I’ve been borrowing from friends and designers, of which there are many out here. People are generous in this community, and there are some beautiful pieces to come (once I wash the dust off my little black dress!)

Anne-Marie Goco, Day 2
As I write this, Burning Man has already started. However, my wear-a-thon has already been going on for over a week. This photo was taken the day after the artists arrived. All the massive art pieces come in a few days before the event, to start setting up. Once that starts, the crew loves to go out on “art tours” to see what’s being erected.
This piece is called the Spire of Fire. It’s a 41-foot steel tower that explodes into flame, created by “Propaniac”.
On the night this photo was taken, there was a full moon rise directly after sunset. The dress is folded down to make a skirt, leaving the sleeves hanging to add shape. I added a satin chemise for an elegant evening look, perfect for the warm night.
Once you find a good pair of shoes out here, you wear them constantly. I’ve got two pairs of boots: they’re dusty as hell, but they get me around.

Prospect Park is such a wonderful summer hangout spot. It hosts concerts, baseball games, lovers, camps, and anyone looking for a place to relax.
The rolling hills are surprisingly picturesque and allow privacy for intimate moments.
I wore the LBD as a vest over an altered 99 cent T and a pair of homemade short shorts. These pictures were taken in front of the grandiose Marquis De Lafayette Memorial on edge of the park
On the way back from the Park I saw this cute dog being driven around on a bike. Living the high life.
Lily Day 11
I went home to Cambridge this weekend and spent some time relaxing in my garden.
I rediscovered this African print dress I made in high school. It seemed quite short. Maybe I grew or became more conservative, but either way the LBD was a stylish cover up. My shoes are from the Silk Market in Beijing and my purse is a Moroccan souvenir from a trip I went on in high school.
My mother is a landscape architect so she devotes most of her free time and love to this secret Cambridge gem.
This is my mother’s adopted stray, Machiata. She’s such a Wild cat.
And this is my tiger of a cat, Chi Chi Boo. He’s a sweetie, and I missed him so so so much.

Magnetism

Today on my way to the my neighborhood grocery store, I walked by a Catholic church that has been up on the market for several years now. I think just about every creative type in the neighborhood fantasizes about buying it, renovating it, and converting it into a live-work studio. Hasn’t happened yet, but what drew my attention today was how the pattern in the gate mimicked some of the patterns in my skirt.
So, if you haven’t noticed yet rocks are of major importance to me. No, not those kind of rocks, crystals, minerals, and semi-precious stones. I like the way they look, but more importantly, I like the way they feel. Here I’ve got a hematite bracelet, which I wear for it’s regenerative powers, composed of individual stones cut into perfect spheres. And it stays together by it’s sheer magnetic force (so long as I don’t walk by a frigerator or something with more magnetic power than I have)! And around my neck is a garnet necklace which also has regenerative powers.
Beneath my little black dress I have a vintage Indian printed cotton halter wrap dress which I’ve had for so long that I can’t remember where it’s from. I love things like this in the summer because their so airy and light, and antique Indian prints are so decorative. At my waist, I have a vintage Guess belt from a thrift store. On my head I have a floppy sun-hat made of ribbon that I got years ago at a Club Monaco sample sale while I was freelancing there. And at my feet, again, are my Grecian lace up sandals.
Kathleen Scully, Day 5
It is another day in the ceramic studio, this time the LBD is paired with white denim and my Dansko clogs. Both of these items are only a year or so old, but I promise to have them for at least four more to make the water usage and environmental impact seem more worth while! They are indeed perfect for the work at hand.
My striped top is yet another great acquirement from Koos, which I have worn for ten plus summers, back in the day I wore it as a dress! My head scarf is from a church thrift store upstate, the necklace is from a street fair in NYC some odd number of years ago, and the copper hexagon bracelet I made, was featured on March 7 by Sheena, and is available for sale on my Etsy shop.
All of the photos today are taken on Pratt’s Campus by Shawn (Moses) Murray.

I’m already double digits into this wear-a-thon, so I decided to step it up a notch today. My mom never put an age limit on when my siblings and I could play with guns. Granted, I’ve never been hunting or killed any living thing- just old stuffed animals, empty beer cans and clays. That coonskin cap is from my elementary school days. It’s so comfortable and snug on my head sometimes I catch myself wearing for for days at a time.
This belt is from Cannon Hill in Frederick.
I got these riding boots on eBay! For some unbelievable deal, like 20 bucks.
Even the shotgun’s stylin’! My sister Elisabeth carved the dino scene with a dremel drill, and the strap is made f rom leftover elephant skin from my mom’s interior design days.
Kathleen Scully, Day 4
Today I ventured out to some of the galleries in Chelsea. For ease of getting around I rode my bike and dressed accordingly, pairing up my LBD with biking shorts underneath, which became barely recognizable with fishnet stockings and proper accessories!
My ring is from a stoop sale in Greenpoint a couple of Summer’s ago. The bracelets are a mix of gifts from my mom, garage sale finds, and a penny cuff that my older sister bought on her first trip to New York. All of the pennies are of the year 1973, supposedly for good luck, well, lucky for me I inherited it when she grew tired of it and now I enjoy the luck!
While taking millinery classes at F.I.T. many years ago some of us pitched in to move a big pile of donations around, and for thanks we were all allowed to take a leather pelt. I chose a red one and made this bag from it. It holds a lot and is really strong!
The necklace of the day I also made from an old pin that was a gift and some remnants from old necklaces. A long day, but a good day! Can’t wait for tomorrow!
Kathleen Scully, Day 3
On my bike ride home from RedHook today on 9th Street, there was this little shell of a car. A kind gentleman waiting for the bus took the great photo above. I thought the period of the car worked well with what I was going for in today’s ensemble, a bit Kathryn Hepburn circa her breakout films in the 1930′s. The LBD is a perfect match to one of my prized possessions from Koos, bias cut linen pants, paired with a silk jersey polo shirt from Ann Taylor (my former employer for almost six years!) My belt is a souvenir from a trip to Ireland. I added high waist belt loops to the dress this morning. The shoes are from a Barney’s Warehouse sale from over seven years ago! They are amazing!
Later on in the day I was at the ceramics studio at school, working on the design development of my bowl. Above I was pouring the slip for the first time in the new mold, and found that the dress worked great as a working uniform too. Pockets!
Here I was able to show off a detail that I fashioned for my bike ride earlier. I added a couple of buttons and button holes on my pants. I not only changed the silhouette to seem more harem-like, but also worked great so that pant legs didn’t get caught in the spokes of the wheels.
Kristin Arzt, Day 8
Photographer Alex Arzt
The only way to get through Maryland’s unbearably muggy summer days is the pool. Today I tied up the LBD and wore it as a cover-up over my 1950′s one-piece that I got from Cannon Hill Antiques here in Frederick. The floral print is something that could only have come out of that time period. I twisted up a 1970′s dish towel as a scarf on my head, purchased at Old Glory Antiques, also in Frederick.
I tied the whole nautical theme together with this conch shell ring that I bought a few months ago in Amsterdam. It’s an actual shell- all the jewelry designer had to do was cut a hole in the center for my finger! I love accessories appropriated from natural objects. The beauty in nature is so unique and original that the only way to capture it is by using the original object.
Bright Young Thing Wear-a-thon, Kristin Arzt
This is Kristin Arzt and she’s taking on her own Bright Young Things Wear-a-thon Challenge. We wanted to know a little bit more about her before she set out on her Summer long adventure…
HOW WOULD YOU DISCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE? Haute-Barnyard Couture, think “Green Acres”. I love fashion but really the country life appeals to me. I’m more about accessories than I am about clothing. I’ll wear overalls, and I’ll pair them with some crazy vintage heels and handbag and my look works both on the farm and in New York City… Read More>>
