Q: Will this dress fit those of us who are more curvy?
A: As you can see from the photos of other Bright Young Things, this dress looks great on all different body types. With expanding pleats that allow for more give or take at the bust and hips, and an easy and universally flattering A-lined shape, the dress has been specifically engineered to fit a wide range of shapes, whether worn backwards or forwards. We have adjusted the fit in each size to best represent that size category and body shape, and we have added a bit to the length in the larger sizes to accommodate the curves. See our Size Chart below for exact measurements.

Q: I’m in between sizes, which size should I choose?
A: It all depends on how you like to wear your clothes. Size down if you have a small bust or like your dresses to fit close at the ribs for a more tailored, slimming effect. Size up if you have a fuller bust or if you prefer a roomier fit. Again, see our Size Chart for exact measurements.
Q: Is the dress machine washable?
A: Yes. The dress is machine washable in cold water with like colors and dryable on low tumble for convenient care. We suggest using the delicate cycle to protect the color and fabric. This also reduces waste by using less energy than a regular wash and dry. We do not recommend dry-cleaning, as it is unnecessary, and toxic to the wearer and the environment.
Q: What’s the best, most energy efficient way to care for my LBD?
A: Ideally, we suggest hand washing the dress in cold water, or machine-washing on the cold delicate cycle with dark colors as the next best option to sustain the life of your dress. Rather than machine drying, hang your dress to dry in the shade (don’t let it bleach out in the sun) to give your dress a longer lifespan and substantially lower your energy usage.
Q: Can you tell us about the factory where the dress will be produced?
A: Our dress runs will be produced in a small New York City sample room. The shop is registered to meet all NY State Department of Labor laws which means: all employees are documented workers who are paid minimum wage or more, receive time and a half pay for all overtime, are given at minimum one day off every week and regular meal breaks, are not given industrial homework, are 16 years of age or older, work in a safe and healthy working environment, are provided with unemployment insurance, and maintain the ability to collect workers comp or disability insurance. All of our interactions with the work force at this sample room have been extremely positive, reflecting a healthy and friendly work environment. See our production blog post for more about our production process.
Q: What’s your return/exchange policy?
A: All sales are final. Due to our size made to order production method, exchanging sizes will be difficult, so please, double check your measurements against our sizing chart and dress size suggestions. In the unlikely event that we ship you an incorrect size or product, we will cover the cost of the exchange shipping up to 30 days of the initial item’s shipping date.
To exchange a dress:
Please email customerservice@youbrightyoungthings.com with an exchange request within 15 days of receiving your item and we will issue an exchange authorization email with the address for return shipment and accompanying instructions. This way we can get a better idea of how best to serve your needs.
Q: When will I receive my dress?
A: Because the dresses are made to order, it will take our production sample room 6-7 weeks to hand make your garment. After that, your dress will ship out as Priority mail with the US Postal Service, 3-8 days in US, and 8-10 days International*.
*For international orders, please check with your country’s customs and duty laws. You maybe subject to paying tarifs or duties accordingly and this may effect the timeline in which you receive your dress.
Q: What are the shipping costs?
A: Shipping to the U.S. is an additional $15, Canada is an additional $30, and International is and additional $45 on top of your dress purchase. This will be added on to the price of the dress upon check out.
Q: How much is the sales tax?
A: There is a 8% sales tax added on to all New York State sales.
Q: Can I purchase more than one dress at a time?
A: We only offer the option of buying 1 dress per order, but you are welcome to order more. So if you wish to buy more than one you will need to put in an additional order per dress.
Q: What is Slow Fashion?
A: Slow Fashion is a new movement that encourages more conscious behavior on both the production and consumption end of garment manufacture. For Bright Young Things, this means that our clothes are made to order for you, after you have pre-purchased your garment. This allows us to eliminate needless waste by producing exactly according to demand. By consenting to wait a little longer to receive your garment, you are making a conscious decision to shop with purpose and deliberation, forgoing the mindless instant gratification of fast fashion.
Q: How was my little black dress produced?
A: This dress is produced locally in New York City at a registered NYC sample-room, which meets all NY State Department of Labor laws. It is produced in a small quantity using locally sourced materials found on the NYC market. The dresses are made to order per size request, which allows us to avoid the overstock excess that occurs when the production exceeds the demand.
