Bright Young Thing Wear-a-thon, Kathleen Scully
AUTHOR Eliza Starbuck
BRIGHT YOUNG THING Kathleen Scully
This is Kathleen Scully. She’s an amazing designer, philosopher, color theorist, intellectual, and collector of all things beautiful. She recently received one of the Uniform Project 365 Limited Edition dresses and immediately started her own wear-a-thon almost by accident. When she began sending in her daily photos to our Submit Your Photos gallery we were so impressed with her style that we offered her a starring spot as one of our featured Wear-a-thoners. So, now she’s officially taking on her own Wear-a-thon challenge and we wanted to share a little bit more about her before she sets out on her month long adventure in the Little Black Dress.
WHERE ARE YOU FROM? I am originally from Marcellus, NY, part of the beautiful Finger Lakes region of Central New York. But I’ve been a Brooklynite for a decade now!
WHAT DO YOU DO? As a recent graduate of Pratt Institutes’s Master’s of Industrial Design Program, I’m sleeping more than I have in three and a half years, looking for work, pursuing some of my own designs, and enjoying Summer in the city!
WHAT’S THE CHALLENGE BEHIND YOUR WEAR-A-THON? I find this is a great opportunity to enjoy a huge slew of clothing and accessories that I haven’t been able to wear for years, as the vast majority of my time has been spent in clothing suitable for working on a band saw, sanding and painting.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE? 1920′s Molly (Molly Ringwald that is in Pretty in Pink.) I looked just like her in Junior High, not long after that movie came out. At the time, I wore almost all vintage, or clothing from my mom.
WHAT’S YOUR NORMAL SUMMER STYLE ROUTINE? I bike as much as possible everywhere! (in sundresses!) Try to remember sunscreen application daily.
WHERE HAVE YOU GOTTEN YOUR WARDROBE’S PRIZE ACCESSORIES? The most prized possessions I have are one-of-a-kind pieces from Koos, who is a former boss, and current friend and mentor.
HOW DO YOU PLAN ON SPENDING THIS SUMMER? Well, that’s a good question. I will have to move at the end of July, but I have no idea where at the moment. If I don’t have a job, I will be packing stuff into storage and heading to Southern Italy where I can stay with friends.
WHAT PART OF THE WEAR-A-THON IS THE MOST EXCITING TO YOU? I’m excited to have reasons to get dressed up every day. Not that I usually need any reason, but this is an extra special reason, and I’ll be giving lots of old clothes some much needed attention.
HOW LONG IS YOUR WEAR-A-THON GOING TO BE? One month, I will be finishing on July 12, 2010.
